Lady Windermere's Fan
(Oscar Wilde)
Oscar Wilde is without question one of England's greatest writers and his plays have held audiences in the palm of your hand since the year dot! In fact, even I, was invited by a Southampton College to teach Oscar Wilde plays/and then I discovered it was to my students in Europe i.e. Austria that I was directing all my enthusiasm, talent and energy. Oscar Wilde's play /Lady Windermere's Fan/ is described as containing ideas of a beautiful artistocratic, lady who was an adored wife and young mother but she appears to be what we refer to as a Protestant or described historically as a /puritan/ - which means overstrict, overzealous, and deeply religious with a great commitment to the Christian faith! As it has been pointed out to me on many occasions, I am not a clergy woman or man or indeed a member of any religious order such as the Carmelite Nuns or other lay groupings/ I have consistently maintained an interest in Literature and deal with this play in that context only! I leave the moralising to the Clergy and their disciples. Mrs Erlynne, a character is this play has a scandalous relationship with Lord Windermere ... its a secret ... but Lady Windermere must never be told in order to keep her sanity ... and so it continues ... I hope like my Austrian students I can invite you to ENJOY the best of Oscar Wilde ... the Playwright, poet, essayist and wit famous for his flamboyant lifestyle as well as idioms and sayings!
