Prodigal Summer
(Barbara Kingsolver)
Prodigal SummerAuthor: Barbara KingsolverAbstract by: Subbulakshmi / 300 / 9 June 2006Abstract type: AbstractThe novel revolves around the lives of Deanna Wolfe, Lusa Maluf Landowski, Garnett Walker and Nannie --- all of who live in the vicinity of the forested mountains of southern Appalachia, USA. The author, a graduate in Biology, draws from her knowledge of the subject and her experiences at her own farm in southern Appalachia, to make her story come alive. Deanna Wolfe in her capacity of wildlife biologist pursues zealously her drive to preserve the fast diminishing coyote species living in the Appalachian forests. Lusa , city girl turned farmer?s wife, with the death of her young husband, suddenly finds herself left to manage his farm. Struggling small time farmers and neighbours Garnett and Nannie seem to have many issues to disagree on, the use of pesticides and their religion being the main ones. All the four protagonists exhibit the same degree of intensity in their passion towards their cause. Initially the book seems to unfold as the different stories of these four main characters. The reader?s interest and involvement heightens with the author?s cleverly intertwining the lives of these people when events and common problems bring them together. Above all, the book brings out Deanna, Lusa, Garnett and Nannie?s concern for Nature and their celebration of it. All this takes place one wild summer in the verdant countryside that is full of promise. The reader is transported to these surroundings by the sheer magic that the author weaves and the realisation dawns on one that man occupies only a minute place on this earth that he shares with its other inhabitants. Putting down Prodigal Summer is like saying goodbye to friends and one wishes one could have more of it. To say anything further about the book would be spoiling a good read.
