Great Expectations
(Charles Dickens)

?Great Expectations? by Charles Dickens is a wonderful, rich tale of Pip Pirrin, a child who develops into a young man, finding fortune in the unlikeliest of places. On his long, often harrowing passage, he encounters many people who treat him cruelly ? from the opening scene in the graveyard where he is threatened by Magwitch, the terrifying escaped convict, through to the perverse and twisted nature of Miss Haversham, the lady who could not go on with life after being jilted at the altar. Along the orphan boy?s path, he finds love and friendship to assuage his trials and tribulation, as he becomes a young gentleman by courtesy of a mysterious benefactor. Dicken?s own social concerns for the young and poor in Victorian times are captured magnificently in this beautifully written masterwork. Pip?s encounters with Estella, the beautiful but cold girl who is a puppet controlled by Miss Haversham still have a power over their audience that reveals a genius author at work. This highly recommended novel is now a standard piece of literature taught in schools throughout the world due to its powerful depiction of working class life for the young and poor. The emotional empathy and sympathy created towards young, vulnerable Pip strikes a chord with both young and old, as he makes his way through life only to discover that his benefactor is quite different to that which he expected. Comparible in tone, atmosphere and subject matter to Dickens' own 'Oliver Twist', the novel reflects the harsh realities of life for a young orphan boy in the nineteenth century. A fascinating interaction takes place between Pip and Magwitch, which reveals a great deal about class boundaries and the human habit of judging upon first impressions. Dickens' own youth was flawed and turbulent, which perhaps explains his genius for getting emotionally into the mind of a young boy and being able to tell such a moving, passionate tale.
