Freud dealt with human sexuality as a scientist; and D.H. Lawrence as a writer. But that is only one aspect of the writer, who belongs to the ?great tradition? set by the likes of George Eliot. Undoubtedly, ?Sons and Lovers? is the most widely read novel of the writer.
This is a novel that deals with the great tragedy of womanhood in the twentieth century. Wedded to a coal miner, the sensitive young girl is treated brutally. The hard conditions of the collieries make men a frustrated lot, who let their frustration on their hapless wives at home. The work of the wives is to run the household and rear up the children. Their hope and joy revolve round their children. When a son is born, exactly the same thing happens. For her, the son becomes the whole world, particularly when she is living with such an insensitive husband. The son becomes her man. The bond between the mother and the son becomes so strong that Paul, that is the son?s name, is unable to develop any sort of healthy relationship with any other woman. Paul?s only emotion is with his mother. He is incapable of developing emotional relationship with any other woman. How can he have a sexual relationship with a woman when there is no emotion in the relationship? That is the dilemma. As days go by, the mother becomes old, bedridden and ultimately she is on deathbed. But death is not forthcoming. Unable to see her suffering the son decides to do that very thing which no son will imagine of doing.
From working class to lower middle class, ?Sons and Lovers? depicts a graphic picture of the life of people of England of the early twentieth century. It deals the ?self conscious? modern man who denies his natural feelings in pursuit of an unknown meaning of life. Above all it explores the great injustice done to woman by man.
