The Undomestic Goddess
(Sophie Kinsella)
Samantha Sweeting is a high-flying lawyer in London. She works long hours, nights and weekends, unable to take time off to look after herself or just smell the roses. Most undomesticated, she has no idea how her vacuum cleaner or oven work, sends all her clothes for dry-cleaning, and has piles of consumed takeaway food boxes in her kitchen. Like her mother, she is extremely successful in her career. At 29, she is most likely to be given a partnership soon. Happily awaiting the annoucement of her partnership, a career milestone she has worked so hard for, she clears her messy desk at work and discovers a huge mistake that she made: she overlooked a memo left on her desk by a senior partner. It is too late to act now, the deadline is over, the mistake cost the company 50 million pounds. Unable to face the consequences of her mistake, she blindly dashes out of the office onto the street and finds herself at the train station. She follows the crowd onto a train and lands in the Cotswolds, the English countryside. Samantha knocks on the door of the first house she sees. She is having a bad headache and asks for a painkiller. The owner of the house mistakes her as an applicant for the job of a maid and gives her a tour of the house, describing her duties. She is shown her room, with an inviting bed. All she longs for is a bed to lie down, a place to stay to escape the realities of life for a while. Samantha lies about herself, presenting herself as a well-qualified maid: she is given the job. Samantha struggles with her new job. She makes a mess in the kitchen, bleaches her hair while cleaning the bathroom. She spends hundreds of pounds buying clothes to replace the ones she destroyed in the washer. Fortunately, the muscular, sexy gardener, Nathaniel, falls in love with her and invites her to his house, where his mother teaches her all she needs to know about cooking, ironing and cleaning. Samantha soon enjoys her country life and her romance with Nathaniel. However, she cannot forget her life in the city. She surfs the internet and finds out that the senior partner has framed her for his own benefit. She returns to her company with the evidence and is given the partnership. Does she return to her stressful life as a city lawyer or give it all up for her newly found domestic bliss in the country with Nathaniel? Samantha makes the choice with her heart.
