Pride Goes Before Fall
(Nathaniel Oluseye)
Odumah is a village that shares its border with two other neighbouring villages, in a town called ?Ezekes?. Unlike its neighbouring village Odumah is a village, which has most of its populace to be men. The number of the male (young men) inhabiting the village outweighs the number of the females there in. owing to this, it had been a case of the survivor of the fittest for any matured unmarried man to get a good loving, caring lady of his choice to choose as a wife, at the same time it is forbidden for any male from the village to engage females from a villages in their neighbourhood, ?Mbago? and village ?Onyereku, respectively. The idea of competing among one another in the village in the name of getting married had been a bone of contention among all the young men of ?Odumah?. This made them to have little or no soft spot for one another, which had been retarding the growth as well as the progress of the village; economically, socially, educationally, religiously, and other facets of their life, which had been deteriorating their standard of living, unlike ?Mbago? and ?Onyereku?. One day, at the sunset, after all the villagers had returned from their markets, farms, and various places where individual earn his/her livelihood, that the king of their land ?Ohiola? held a meeting with all his chiefs and all the wise men of their land, discussing the various ways by which dispute can be minimized, if not totally eradicated from their land, and how their standard of living could be improved. The meeting was rounded off with the suggestion that, a contest exercise should be organized among the matured ladies and matured young men of their land, whereby they have to compete physically with one another, that whoever wins among the men, shall be highly rewarded and given the privilege of choosing the lady of his choice from the female contestants, while any lady that wins shall also be awarded and given the privilege of choosing the man of her choice from the male contestants. Three days later Ohioma sent one of his town crier to inform every member of the village, that he will like to hold a meeting with them at the sunset, which will help to boost the economy and increase their standard of living. Soon his messenger arrived with the feedback that he has delivered the message to the whole villagers of their land, ?well done?, said ?Ohiola?, and he further informed him to prepare, and tidy up the frontage of his palace for the meeting, before the sunset. At the sunset, the meeting was discussed as earlier planned and a day was been fix for the contest to take place, which happens to be the village next market day, after all the villagers had agreed to the proposed contest about to take place. And they all depart for their home.
