Short Stories Of Guy De Maupassant
(Guy de Maupassant)
How He got the Legion of Honour Some people want official recognition for their ?services? to the society. Most of them do not get, some contrive to get and one or two get posthumously. You can be sure that those who get their official recognition posthumously mostly deserve it. Most of the recipients of official honours mostly do not deserve it. All these decorated people will stop being proud of their official honours if they read Mau passant?s this little hilarious short story. The trouble was, the hero of our story wanted to be decorated. But nothing worthwhile entered into the head of our poor fellow though the head was quite empty. He failed to get Bachelor of Arts. Not knowing what to do M. Caillard(that is our hero?s name) married a pretty girl, which was no problem for him because he had enough money. He moved with people of his society, was proud to have the acquaintance of a deputy through whom he might get introduced to a minister or two. But all his peace was being robbed because he could not get decorated. Ultimately he broached the subject with his pretty wife and asked her to speak to one Mr. Rosselein, a deputy, to help to get decorated as Officer of the Academy. The smart lady was quite surprised because our hero was not even a bachelor of arts but she knew her stupid husband and agreed to his request. And M. Caillard set out to write all sorts of nonsensical research papers like ?People?s Right to Instruction?, ?The Instruction of Children by means of the Eye?, etc., But the Legion of Honour did not seem to be forthcoming. So Mr. Rosselein advised him to visit the libraries in France and make some researches on certain subjects. So our hero set out for a sojourn of France becoming a great nuisance to librarians. In between one such trip when he was away for a week he decided to give a surprise visit to his wife and reached his house at midnight. He heard some noises inside. After quite some time his wife appeared showing great surprise and happiness. In side the house M. Caillard saw a coat and his face became pale and made enquiries with his wife. The lady, greatly disturbed at first, shouted that her husband had been decorated and it was a great official secret. M. Rosselein managed to get it for him, she said. The visiting card of Rosselein inside the coat pocket confirmed this. After a week our hero got decorated as the Legion Of Honour. Do you still want to be officially decorated? SATHYA
