Where Madness Lies? Jeffrey L. Scudder
He pulled himself through the gap in the floor left by the open trap door, scrambled to his feet, and then he assumed a defensive karate stance, with level fists out in front of him, while he surveyed the gloomy attic. In the complete and quiet darkness, Derrick reached for the flashlight stuck in his pants? back pocket. He thumbed the switch on, and a beam of light leaped forth. Slowly, within its illumination, he scanned the contents of the attic. To his left, several racks overflowed with various articles of clothing, cracked lamp shades on the floor, an old television set, and a record player. Suddenly, he sensed a presence pervade the entire attic. Something big and foul started breathing hoarsely in the room! He glanced up and around, but still discerned nothing visible within the range of the flashlight?s glow. Then without further predetermination, he hastily backed down the ladder. He descended the stairs by gigantic leaps until he reached the second landing. Above him, Derrick heard the steps groan and splinter. He looked up, and saw the walls bend outward, the banister explode off its wedged base and the iron framework beneath it melt, as something monstrous and invisible smashed its way towards him.
