Surely You Are Joking, Mr.feynmam !
(Ralph Leighton)
The usual image we have of an eminent scientist ? a Nobel prize winner at that ? is that he is always up in his ivory tower, thinks, eats and sleeps with science only and is oblivious to the mundane world. Well, there are always exceptions and the protagonist of this book, Mr. Feynman is a pleasant example. The book is a collection of anecdotes as related by Mr. Feynman himself to Ralf Leighton, almost verbatim. As one reads on, one cannot help being struck by his extraordinary curiosity in all matters. He comes out as a lively person, full of zest for life and adventure ; a very rare quality in a scientist working in the highest levels of thought. In the case of Mr. Feynman the old adage , ? Jack of all trades, master of none ? should be scrapped. He enlivens whatever he touches and excels in it. An ever bubbling sense of humour runs throughout his various activities. What do you want him to try? Safecracking, painting, drumming, learning languages, gambling, solving puzzles, scenting a spoor like a bloodhound(yes!, or just painting the town red. You name it, he has tries it all , always applying his razor sharp analytical mind in every situation. It is also remarkable that a man possessing such a brilliant mind and so much talent does not exhibit a tinge arrogance and that he rather prefers to yo mingle and move with the common run of men of all kinds and all professions. The incidents are told in a homely, conversational style . After finishing the book one is left with a lingering sense of freshness and joy. One is almost wistful that the book ends.
