Treehorn's Treasure
(Florence Parry Heide and Edward Gorey)
All the leaves on the tree are turning into dollar bills and Treehorn is excited at the thought of all the mail order items he can buy. Unfortunately his parents haven?t become any more attentive. In this charming sequel to The Shrinking Of Treehorn, our hero discovers the vast opportunities and pit falls afforded by wealth. Treehorn?s father gives him a dollar. Treehorn wants to use it to buy a he-man belt but his father tells him that saving is important and that money doesn?t grow on trees. Only in this story it does and using a ladder borrowed from the decorator ?who thinks that kids should have to work for their money- Treehorn harvests a good crop. When he takes his dollar bills to the candy store he tells the cashier that all the leaves on the tree are turning into dollar bills and she doesn?t believe him. When he tells his mother she complains about the colour for the new curtains. Treehorn?s best friend hears about his new comic collection and then falls out with him because of a title that Treehorn doesn?t even have. Then Treehorn goes to a restaurant with his family and doesn?t get a menu; he doesn?t even get a seat. But at least he has a closet full of candy bars and bubble gum. When the dollar bills start turning back into leaves Treehorn is philosophical. He still has the dollar that his father gave him and at least he can get his he-man belt.
