Family Matters
(Rohinton Mistry)
Reading Indian Authors who write in English can be an amazing experience for the simple reason that no matter where or what they might have done in their lives, their stories reflect and weave in the magic of something very homebound, an incident they might have heard, an experience they could have witnessed, or childhood memories of the country in which they were born. Rohinton Mistry, an author with an excellent style of narration has in his book, ?Family Matters?, beautifully conveys the problems that almost every other family goes through around the world and yet are too cultured or hesitant to admit it. It recounts the life of an elderly Mr. Nariman Vakeel, a 70 year old Parsi widower and the patriarch of a small discordant family. The book speaks of the relationships, the living habits and behavior of those around him, his step son, and daughter, his own daughter and her family?and how they manage to fit him in their already confused and cacophonous lives. An amazingly alive piece of literature?the author has managed to make the reader feel almost as if one he/she is amongst them. It is a must read for those who can relate to varying cultures and experience them as if they are his own. Writing skills are par excellence, and not one moment is the reader given a chance when he/she feels bored enough to want to put the book down. This is not a thriller or a mystery, but yes, it uncovers more truths of life than one could fairly imagine.
