The first thing that you will need are fingers. Then a guitar. Squeeze an index finger somewhere on the first heaviest string (E). Then strrretch down your middle and ring fingers so you skip a fret and they both land two frets down on the A &D strings (2nd and 3rd) (this may be easiest at first with just a ring finger covering the A and D strings). Now you have a power chord and you can move it up and down the guitar neck to make different sounds (cool). Now play that sequence of 4 chords that sounds real 50ish (C, Am, F, G); play it warmly and cleanly for a surf sound, but its fun also to make it sound dirty. Now put small lead fills between each chord that you change slowly to the next one; practice different lead fills. Listen to Dead Milkmen songs and Joe Genaros solo albums, listen to Richie Valens-- that one song from the movie Sandlot.
