Houmour Is The Best Medicine
(Julie Imeson)
Whether as a child a teenager or an adult, I can honestly say that if I was asked what kept me going when faced with adversity the following qualities were essential to one's own well being. These included grit courage determination and above all a sense of humour. As a seven-year-old girl I can clearly remember being lost in London, my father had instructed my two older brothers to occupy the six of us in the local parks. However I never was able to keep up to their high walking speed. Eventually I was throughly lost and frightened, two elderly people eventually stooped down and asked me what the problem was? I was bawling my eyes out; I managed to inform them that I was lost. At hearing my plight I was taken to the nearest police station. I was of course asked all the usual question my name and address? I was so hungry and thirsty, I replied thirsty for my Christian name and hungry for my surname. I was asked the same questions several times and of course I gave the same answers. The police officer realizing they were not going to get anywhere said, " For the Lord?s sake feed the child". At this point I was taken off to the officers mess. Here I was given cheese sandwiches and a glass of milk. I was then taken back for further questioning. Well I had no problem giving the police my name date of birth and school. However, giving them a home address proved impossible, as one did not really exist. Home was in the back of a lorry a car floor even a relative?s floor. As the police proceded to track down my father's where abouts, I can remember thinking if only I could stay here for the rest of the school holiday. At least it is warm comfortable and you even get fed. The police felt like my best friend. I can remember seeing an advert on television advertising Brook bond Tea with two actors dressed up as monkeys saying aren?t our policemen wonderful? My first thoughts were yes the one's who looked after me certainly were.
