Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Imitation, they say, is the highest form of flattery. But when a 19th century novel written by a member of the not-yet-emancipated sex is adapted into a film to suit a country half a world away, is vouched for by the redoubtable Kathleen Kelly in 'You've Got Mail', and figures in the Top 10 Books list of more than half the female population of the anglicised world, flattery, I would be wont to think, has scaled new heights. Pride And Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, is a classic as timeless as it is universal. It's masterfully coined opening line, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.", only gets more delighful as the novel progresses. In the almost marginalised world of the English countriside you will meet every girl's heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, the nightmare mother, Mrs. Bennet, the rest of her five daughters, a sardonic father, a pompous cousin, a littany of neighbours, the coveted visitor Mr.Bingley and of course, his friend and my personal heartthrob, Mr.Darcy. Gear up to be waltzed into a bevy of balls and enjoy the verbal repartee between Elizabeth and Darcy that showcases Austen at her very best. This is a tale of emotions and wisdom, a story both for the thinker and the feeler. Read it at the level of pure amusement, or dig deeper through caricatured characters and witty dialogue to unearth the still human feelings of suspicion and insecurity, courage and contempt, wisdom and folly. And when you're done, resist the urge to begin again and ask yourself first - Who was proud and who was prejudiced? Like all classics, the answer will be dramatically different each time you read the book.
