The love tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet' by the English writer and poet William Shakespeare, published 1595, is about the legendary love story of two descendants of hostile, but very influential Patrician families in Verona. Romeo, a Montague, loves Juliet, a Capulet, from the moment of their first meeting at a masked ball in her house. Already the next day Romeo plans the wedding, together with his friend, the priest Father Lorenzo, who has the obligation to reconcile both families. But a duel develops out of a disagreement between Romeo's best friend Mercurio and Tybalt, a cousin of the Capulet family. Mercurio dies from his injuries; enough reason for Romeo to get revenge. He kills Tybalt in a fight and the princes ban Romeo from Verona. Is this the end of the love affair? As a farewell gesture Romeo spends the wedding night with with Juliet but after he leaves her the Capulets announce the impending wedding of their daughter to the Count Paris. Out of sheer desperation she turns to Father Lorenzo and fulfills his plan: a letter is to inform Romeo, that his Julia will escape the wedding with Paris by taking a tranquilizer and feigning death. But this letter doesn't reach Romeo and so he only hears of Julias (fake) death. After obtaing poison, he kills himself in the tomb of the Capulets and as Julia awakes next to him and sees him lifeless, she stabs herself. Thus recognise the families, gathered at the tomb that their insight came to late. The work of Shakespeare is because of its classic-dramtic form and its beauty of language and content not only for students absolutely worthwhile reading. The knowledge about this classic writer is almost mandatory, because he has often been published in world literature and film. The motiv of love despite impediments moves all dispositions and some expressions of the characters are still in use today.
