My Sister's Keeper Critical Review
My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, is a beautifully crafted novel that touches the reader's heart. Picoult forms a captivatingjoumey of sacrifice and love through the Fitzgeralds. The story questions, from various point of views, what it means to be an ideal family, and an even greater individual.
When Kate Fitzgerald is diagnosed with APL, a rare form of leukemia, she is at the cusp of her childhood; her parents fall to shambles. they are revived with hope, however, when Anna is conceived. Anna, being a genetic match to Kate, meant there was still a chance. Blood and bone marrow transfusions enabled the sisters to grow together, year after year.
As the years continue, and Kate reaches the mere age of 16, a major issue is asked of Anna: to sacrifice one of her kidneys to Kate. Filing for medical emancipation isn't easy for Anna, but she knew it had to be done. Her mom can't seem to grasp why, but her father is more accepting. Jesse, Anna and Kate's older brother, is finally content to see someone other than Kate receiving so much attention. As Anna's trial inches closer, the Fitzgeralds inch further from each other, not taking the time to perceive what the core problem really is.
When the trial finally arrives, discovery of each Fitzgerald is revealed to the courtroom, to each other, and to themselves. This discovery leads to disaster, which gives a miracle that molds new lives.
Surely to bring mixed tears of sorrow and joy, My Sister's Keeper is one to not only read, but to feel. To feel with feelings that may change a view of siblings, parents, or best friends. It is most certain, though, that the story opens eyes that have been closed, to the reality of people, and their capability to alter lives of those who encompass them.
