Under The Tuscan Sun
(Frances Mayes)

Publicidade
A summer rental in Tuscany leads to a life-long journey for San Fransisco Creative Writing Professor Frances Mayes. She and her companion Ed search summer after summer for the perfect dwelling place to call their own in Tuscany and, once they find it, that is when the journey begins Under the Tuscan Sun.
It is called Bramasole, a salute to the Sun. Frances Mayes lets us walk with her as she first wanders in awe around its ancient and abandoned rooms. We keep her and Ed company as they quietly explore the nearby village while they wait for monetary transactions to be begun, processed and finalized as these two Californians are watched by villagers with amused tolerance. Californians do things so differently from Tuscans.
Finally Frances is handed a huge black cast iron key. It is her front door key. She now has a home in a place that will become home.
But first come the workers and the work, the renovation jobs done somewhat like expected while she is teaching in San Fransisco, the jobs done underfoot while she and Ed summer at Bramasole, the jobs that don't get done because in August nobody works in Tuscany. We come away from the renovations of Bramasole covered with as much dust as Frances.
And the estate, the terraces, the olive trees, the wells, the orchard walls, the cisterns, the Etruscan road, these each contribute their soil and branches, weeds and herbs to Frances's fingernails and memories.
Once we know Bramasole like an old friend we embark with Frances and Ed on excursions into the surround towns, villages and Etruscan caves. We taste wines and breads and fresh, cold-pressed olive oil. We enjoy with them the herb-laden dishes of the eateries of small Tuscan way-side places. We take hot dusty trips and luxuriate in Tuscan hotels, then return to the cool, happy seclusion of Bramasole.
Along with becoming friends with the people, places and foods, we become friends with the preparations for Tuscan cooking, and we ache to taste those breath-stopping tomatoes, those crisp cucumbers, those herbs, fruits and berries. And after awhile we know just which wines will go best with the day's menus. As the guests of Bramasole come and go and marvel at the sight of nature spread before them, we're glad that we came along, too, and we find a treasured place to lay our cherished copy of Under the Tuscan Sun, because we shall read it again...and again.
