Hanging On To Max

Book Review

Hanging onto Max by Margaret Bechard is an entertaining and quick read. The style of the book is funny and sarcastic. This book is relatable, especially to teenage boys and girls, but overall for anybody who enjoys reading. Hanging onto Max keeps you on your toes, making it a book you definitely want to read.
Although Hanging onto Max can be for a variety of ages, I think it best fits under the category of teenage boys and girls. In the book, Sam and Brittany have sex, and Brittany becomes pregnant. The twist is that Brittany feels she can?t handle having a baby, and is also moving away. Sam wants to keep the baby, so he does. He takes full custody of his child Max. Sam is a senior in high school with a lot of responsibility. His only wish is to graduate. In schools around our state, I see many couples who are having a baby, or already have one. I don?t think either the guy or girl realizes the amount of responsibility in having a child. This book portrays how having a baby affects your life in a lot of ways.
The certain style the author uses in Hanging onto Max is funny and keeps the book moving. Sam, the main character voices how he feels about the events in his life at certain times in the book. His opinions can vary from sad to sarcastic. Also, this book includes many flashbacks about Sam?s life which makes the book more understandable, and a faster enjoyable read.
Hanging onto Max is at an easy level of comprehension, but that does not mean it isn?t well worth reading. It is funny and entertaining. Every time I picked up the book, I read a huge part of the book. Hanging onto Max associates with today?s issues and concerns, but does not create negative perceptions on them.
