Antony, a Roman triumvir, is held captive in Alexandria by the charms of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.A messanger comes from Rome bringing news of the death of his wife, Fulvia, and the daring of Sextus Pompeius who commands the sea. Antony realizing his duty tells the messenger hat he will come and bids Cleopatra farewell. After his departure he sends a pearl to Cleopatra as a parting gift. Pompeius at Massina rejoices at Antony?s absence but is startled on hearing of his return.The triumwirs: Antony, Cesar and Lipidius meet at Rome. Cesar complains that Fulvia had stirred up a civil war. Mecenas begs them to enforce no futher the griefs between them, and Agrippa suggests that Antony should marry Octavia, Cesar?s sister. To this Antony is agreeable. Cleopatra is moody at the loss of Antony. A messanger comes from Rome with the news that Antony is married Octavia and Cleopatra asks for a description of her.Pompey nd Cesar meet near Misenum. Pompey says it is to avange his father that he has taken up arms against the Rome. They arrange terms of peace and banquet is held on Pompey?s galley of Misenum. When the triumvirs were in their cups Menas, a friend of Pompey, suggests murdering them. Pompey refuses. Antony takes his wife Octavia to Athens. Cleopatra, however, exercises her influence over Antony which angers Octavius Cesar. Octavia begs Antony to let her go to Rome and bring about a reconciliation between Cesar and Antony. As soon as his wife has left he hastens to Alexandria and makes Cleopatra Queen of Syria, Cyprus and Lydia. Cesar welcomes his sister. Cleopatra willingly joins Antony in his campaign. He fights Cesar at sea; is defeated and sends Euphronius to make peace. Cesar refuses terms to Antony but offers peace to Cleopatra if she will give up Antony. Cesar sends Thyreus to Cleopatra as his messenger. Antony has him whipped.Antony recovers his spirit and determinates to fight Cesar on land. Enobarbus deserts Antony. The first battle is in Antony?s favour and Antony returns with joy to Cleopatra. Antony is however betrayed into sending his best troops to man his ships. Thinking Cleopatra has had a hand in this he would not allowed her into his presence. She tries to soften his heart by pretending to be dead. Hearing this he bags Eros to kill him but faithful friend falls on his own sword. Then Antony also falls on his sword and is carried bleeding into Cleopatra?s presence. She tends him till he dies. Cesar laments his death. Cleopatra comes to Cesar and arranges to take her to Rome but clothed in her gorgeous robes and wearing her crown and she and her maids commit suicide by means of poisonous asps. Cesar comes and finds her death.
