We have lost part of our heritage: Manmohan
New Delhi, May 28 (PTI): India has lost part of its heritage because of inadequate preservation efforts in the country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said yesterday.
Also, there has been under-utilisation of manuscripts and other historical documents to rediscover the country's ancient past, he noted.
"Let us acknowledge that despite our pride as a people in our ancient civilization, our domestic efforts to preserve its legacy have been inadequate. Consequently, we have lost, perhaps irretrievably, part of our heritage," Singh said in his address after releasing a catalogue of Jain manuscripts here.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the need to explore a variety of material while carrying out historical research. "Manuscripts and documentary material, as a result of their very fragile nature, have not been utilised as much as other historical material," he remarked.
Singh also spoke about the relevance of preserving what he referred to as the country's spiritual heritage. "In our quest for material prosperity, we sometimes forget the spiritual heritage of our civilisation. A balance between the material and the spiritual can help restore sanity when we are caught in the rough and tumbel of life," he said.
The Prime Minister also referred to Jainism's "principled stand" against the caste system, saying it still serves as inspiration to fight for human equality.
The catalogue that Singh released was a collection of Jain manuscripts drawn from London's British Library.
British High Commissioner Michael Arthur and Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni also addressed the gathering.
