Viscos is the small spot in Pyrenees set up by prison breakers, murderers and hookers. Aforetime St.Savin had come to the town and converted the leader of the thugs, Ahab. That was the turning point in the history of Viscos -from then on the other villagers also gave in the conversion and led the rural lives of the shepherds, hunters or shopkeepers. Viscos has turned into the holiday resort with time. The visitors were gloryfing its silence and serenity, but the young generation oftener and oftener had decided to leave the hometown, where the life was the same for ages and there were no prospects for the future. Berta,the widow, was sitting as always behind her house, watching the people, weather and talking withe her late husband. She was the first, who saw the stranger with the demon. That unknown man had made for the mountains, where he buried eleven bullions of gold. Then he chose the girl - Chantal Prym - led her there and showed the treasure. He explained, that he was going to test the villagers to find out whether people were good or bad by their nature. He was ready to give the whole gold to Viscos, on condition that its dwellers would commit murder on one arbitrarily chosen person. He was aware that such an amount of gold would solve a lot of problems of Viscos and save the spot from becoming a ghost town. "The Demon and Mrs. Prym" is another brilliant story by Paulo Coelho about the constant struggle between good and bad, between human 'angels' and "demons'. The author raises the most besetting aspects of human life such as the point of misery or the predicaments of the act of God. He reveals that we are often not brave enough to change anything or to defy the majority.
