Mr.Godfrey Nickeleby married late in life with an old flame. Godfrey had no source of income and failed to earn any. But he got a small fortune bequeathed to him by his uncle. Ralph Nickeleby. They had two sons, eldest of who was christened after his uncle. He was more cunning, money minded and selfish while the younger was a gentle soul and led a quiet country life. Mr.Godfrey Nickdeleby when his end was at hand bequeathed three thousand pounds to his eldest son and a thousand pound and a small piece land to his youngest son. Nicholas had one son and a daughter. To meet the expenses of his extended family he made a speculative investment and lost. He left his wife and children, Nicholas 19yrs and Kate -14yrs, without any means to survive. They moved to London as a tenant of one miniature painter Miss La Creevy Ralph visited then on learning that his brother was no more He promptly advised her to make them vacate her premises as they had no means to pay her weekly rent.. Ralph was an indifferent person without any concern for the dependents of his younger brother?s family. The very first encounter between the uncle and nephew was acrimonious But he got him appointed as Assistant ? Master at an annual salary of five pounds with free lodging and boarding, at an academy, Dotheboys Hall, near Greta Bridge in Yorkshire run by one Mr.Wackford Squeers. It purported to educate young children in addition to meeting their other needs at an annual fee of twenty guineas. Newman Noggs was all purpose employee of Ralph. He knew about Squeers and his academy and the fate that was waiting for Nicholas He passed on a letter to Nicholas that whenever he was in need of a shelter in London he was welcome to his abode. Very shortly Nicholas came to realise that the academy was in fact a Horror house where young kids were tortured physically and mentally in the worst possible manner. Smike was one of them but when his guardians discontinued paying his fee Squeers started treating him worse than a slave. Smike could not bear this inhuman torture any longer and manage to escape once .Mrs. Squeers hunted him down and brought back to Dotheyboys Hall to inflict punishment in such a manner that it may serve as example to other boarders . Nicholas was simmering with anger for the humiliation and insult suffered during his stay could not mutely witness the flogging of poor Smike any more and snatching the whip from. Squeers whipped him to his heart?s content. While walking away to London he met with his once rival John Browdie who was pleased to learn about the severe thrashing of Squeeers by Nicholas and lent him money to meet his journey expenses. At an inn he was surprised to meet Smike again and took him along as a companion. In London he took shelter at Noggs place who apprised him with the news about his sister and mother. Reluctantly he and Smike proceeded to Portsmouth to try his luck. Some twelve miles short of Portsmouth he met with Mr. Vincent Crummies a theatrical person who gave him an opportunity in his theatre company to work and act. One day he got an urgent message from Noggs that he should return to London immediately to save Kate who was in danger. Back in London he came to learn about the evil machinations of his uncle Ralph who without any compunction about his relationship with Kate had tried to use her to further his business interests A lecherous villain ?Sir? Mulburry Hawks,a business associate of Rlph had ill intentions to wards her. Nicholas learnt about him and his friends? intentions towards his sister while they were busy in drinking and licentious jestings. Hawk was the main culprit and refused to identify himself. Nicholas dragged Hawk out of his cabriolet and snatching his horsewhip gave such a beating that for several months he remained confined to bed. Later he shot his friend ?Lord? Frederick Verisopht in a duel and had to runaway from the country for ever. Nicholas managed to get a job in Cheerybles firms. Theywere so impressed by him that in addition to provide an abode to live did many other favours . Once Smike got accidently kidnapped by Squeers and rescued by John Brownie. Mr. Bray was a distant relation of Cheeryble His extravagant way of life had left him in a very poor financial as well as physical health. He had taken some loan from a crook money lender Arthur Gride and was unable to repay it. Gride conspired with Ralph Nickeleby to corner Bray to marry his teenaged daughter Madeline with him in the settlement of his debt. Madeline was hardly 19years of age and Gride in his seventies. Sudden death of Bray left Madeline an orphan without any means. Cheerybles had a nephew, Frank. He wanted to marry Kate. Smike was suffering from consumption and eventually became a victim of it. Ironically it was discovered that Smike was actually son of Ralph Nickeleby. Facing adverse days Ralph finally committed suicide. His property went to the government. Nicholas Nickeleby married Madeline and Frank Kate. Cheerybles made Nicholas one of the partners of their firm. He was already living in the house provided to him by Cheerybles.
