500 Mile Walkies
(Mark Wallington)
Whether you have been to the South West Peninsular of the British Isles or not you will find this humorous book to your liking. With his unlikely companion, Boogie the streetwise, not too sure on pedigree, dog, he camps, cooks and encounters many adventures. Whilst there is an occasional skipping over parts of his walk the reading experience is a pleasure. Mr Wallington writes with a comic tilt the whole time and it is plain to see that he is a skilled wordsmith. His ability is proved when you learn that he produced material for Not the Nine O?clock News and the Dave Allen Show. If you are a lover of the South West and have been to many of the places yourself you will enjoy the trip, especially if he passes through one of the places you went on holiday. As soon as you read a part appropriate to you you will want to visit again to relish the new angle the writer brings. One wonders if the various tourist boards from Mindhead round the coast to Swanage have commissioned this book and if they had then they have got their moneys worth. I was surprised to find that the writer has written many books including a novel ?Happy Birthday Mr Shakespeare? and a book about the exploration of the source of the Thames, again with Boogie the dog, that also is liberally sprinkled with amusement and an enormously informative book. However, if your idea of entertainment is following one man and his dog around the country then this is the book for you. This is not a travel book in the Bill Bryson category but then he is not setting out to write the great travel book but ask you to walk with him and his dog, who apparently has bad breath and makes awful smells from particular regions of his body, from Somerset round the coast to Dorset.
