The criminal undercurrents of a civilized society on a perfect working day, with nothing bad suspected, are sketched in this novel in a thrilling way.
Jack Stapleton, a medical examiner in the city of New York, is sincere to the core in his duties. He identifies Jason Papperson?s case as affected by anthrax after the autopsy on the body. As per the instructions received from his chief, he reports the matter to the director of the Mayor?s office of Emergency Management and city epidemiologist to put them on the alert.
He was not really happy with the security arrangements made by the officials, and goes in person to the office of the deceased to find out any clue as to the source of the infection and collects samples of dust from his office. He finds out from the reports that a tiny blue star from the samples contained anthrax spores. He accidentally dashes into one cab driver, a Russian who was supposedly come to pick the dead man in his taxi. He says that he?s from Sverdlovsk. Jack remembered that in a textbook it was mentioned that there was a leak of anthrax from a secret bio-weapons chest in Sverdlovsk
On the same day his colleague does an autopsy on a dead boy called Brad Cassidy. He had been crucified and skinned alive. He was described by FBI as belonging to PAA(People?s Aryan Army), a sort of neo-Nazis organization into which young whites are lured into for their peculiar style of dressing in sleeveless T-shirts, skinned heads and loud music. They are said to posess dangerous arms like AK-47 and indulge in violence.
Next day a boy from his locality comes to complain to him, that his sister had died on that day at very young age. He suspects his brother in law, but in the hospital it has been declared as a natural death. Jack inquires into the matter and collects samples in an out of sorts way(by-passing bureaucracy) and the sample analysis reveals a deadly poison, Botulinum Toxin in her body.
Yuri Davydov, the Russian cab driver, has set up a micro-biology lab in the basement of his house and, joining hands with PAA, is planning to cause mass destruction in the New York City. He tested his bio-weapon on Jason Papperson and his wife Connie Davidon, being confident that doctors will not be able to find out the cause. He mistakenly thinks that Jack is on his scent and informs Curt PAA captain.
Jack is miraculously saved from the planned assault, by his local basketball friends. He witnesses Yuri getting killed by Curt. In the end Jack and Laurie understand that the city has escaped from the grave danger due to the double crossing by the Russian on PAA.
The author gives a warning to the public to be alert and to play an important role in thwarting danger from such weapons. SATHYA
