The novel portrays the protagonist Inman, and further discusses his journey in pursuit of his beloved, Ada.The novel has the American Civil War as its background. The novelist truthfully brings out the turmoil, pain and suffering people underwent during the civil wars. Inman comes across various people from different races, and status of the society. All these people are the victims of the war and affect Inman profoundly. Inman faces many difficulties in his journey home. He endures them all in the hope of finding peace in his home and lover, Ada. But wherever he goes, he is haunted by the people as a deserter of the war. Finally, he reaches home only to find eternal peace through his death.
