From Physics To Metaphysics
(M.S. NAGARAJAN)

Code Name God is the spiritual autobiography of Mani Bhaumik, the scientist internationally reputed for his groundbreaking work on laser technology. He played a lead role in the invention of what has come to be known as LASIK technique that helps quick, painless eye surgery. Most men of science are averse to religion and disbelieve in any supernatural agency affecting human lives. There are some who openly declare themselves agnostics and brag loudly about it. Here is a U.S.-based scientist of Indian origin who explains the relationship between science and religion, who tries to connect the material with the spiritual. How does he manage to forge a link between science and spirituality, which are normally held to be irreconcilable? What is the common ground between fact and faith, mind and matter, between evolutionists and creationists? Well, that is precisely what this masterful book is all about. Drawing analogies from quantum Physics, Bhaumik arrives at this conclusion: Now, I believe for the first time in human history, we find remarkable support from science for the one source of religion. We have objective knowledge of an abstract entity that permeates the entire universe. Inseparable association of that universal entity with consciousness also appears credible... . It is reasonable to assume the feasibility of just one source, as envisioned by the world's various spiritual traditions. (198). Search for peace
Bhaumik calls this one source by its code name: God. The 20 chapters that comprise this handy volume fall into three convenient divisions: his early struggle in India in dire poverty; extravagant wealth and lavish life in the lap of luxury in the U.S.; and finally, his spiritual crisis leading to metaphysical speculations and search for inner peace (whence the subtitle The Spiritual Odyssey). Written in easy, flowing style, the book has a Vedantic appeal in so far as it is a quest for the meaning of life. Born in a small village in Bengal of poor parents, Mani experienced all ills that human flesh is heir to. His father who was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi took part in the freedom struggle and in consequence had to face incarceration and forced alienation from his family. Early in life Mani learnt the essential lessons of life: never give up and nothing happens without a fight. His association with Mahatma Gandhi taught him the virtues of forbearance and fortitude. The doctrine of Sarvodaya planted in him the firm conviction that change must first of all occur within one's self. With dogged perseverance he continued his studies against all odds, and succeeded in gaining admission to the prestigious IIT. First step That was only the first step in his success story. With a Ph.D. and published papers, he secured the Sloane Foundation Fellowship for postdoctoral work at UCLA. Nothing succeeds like success. He accomplished every bit of what everyone aspires for: the American dream. Like Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby or Orson Welles's citizen Kane, Mani grew sick of his abundant wealth and opulence. He turned inward. The results of his inquiry into the mysteries of life are recounted in every scientific detail in some of the memorable passages of the book. He talks of the attainment of a higher level of transcendental consciousness (`religious epiphany') in which there is "dissolution of ego boundaries, a merging of the observer and the observed, a union with the one source of all." His scientific background enables him to render his core mystical experience in conceptual terms. It is described as an "altered sense of space and time, the dissolution of self and ego, and a perception of being somehow unified with the one source of all". (200).
