Warangal: Archaeologists are dismantling the Thousand Pillars Temple in the Andhra Pradesh town of Hanamkonda pillar by pillar. They aim to settle the sinking foundation of the temple, realign and set up all the 1,000 pillars at the 12th century temple. They have gotten as far as removing 500 pillars.
Once all the pillars are numbered and removed, experts from the Archaeological Society of India hope to refurbish and reconstruct the temple with all its thousand pillars, giving it a fresh lease of life.
The pillars are being shifted from the temple complex to the Padmakshi temple around two km away. Some of them however were damaged in the process.
This attracted the attention of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which asked the district and ASI officials to submit a report . The incident triggered criticism that the project was not being handled properly.
These incidents have not dampened the enthusiasm of the archaeologists. Superintending engineer Dr Jitender Das said that the work would be completed in two years. "We have relocated the pillars safely and civil engineering experts from the local National Institute of Technology will formulate a plan to put them back on a solid foundation," he said.
"There will be no laxity," he said. "We will not tamper with the architectural marvel in any manner".
The star-shaped temple housing shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya was built by Rudra Deva, the most famous king of the Kakatiya dynasty in 1163.
Mr Gangu Upendra Sharma, head priest of the temple, said that the Thousand Pillars temple was originally known as the Maha Rudreshwara temple because of the gigantic Shiva Linga in the sanctum sanctorum. "We should not overlook the temple?s sanctity even while admitting its historical value," said Mr Sharma. "Devotees of the Lord Shiva who visit the temple everyday easily outnumber the tourists."
Each pillar of the temple should be protected and re-erected in the same place as before, the head priest said.
Civil engineering expert Prof M. Pandu Ranga Rao, former faculty member of the NIT, said that the experts were discussing whether to remove the entire foundation or build up on the available one. "Whatever the final plan, ensuring a strong foundation will be the top priority," said Prof. Rao. Then begins the task of piecing together the jigsaw puzzle.
