The Famous Hitchhiker's Guide

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the first story in a five part series. It is a blend of science-fiction and comedy that seems to work very well, in my opinion. The first part has to do with the events leading shortly after the destruction of the Earth as told by a man named Arthur Dent. The Earth was destroyed to clear a pathway for an alien highway heading through our solar system. One of Arthur's best friends, Ford Prefect, helped him escape by hitching a ride on one of the starships that destroyed the planet. As it turns out, Ford is actually an alien himself, who has been stuck on Earth while working for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Hitchhiker's Guide is basically an electronic guide book for the universe. Arthur Dent is soon swept up in an amazing adventure in space involving Zaphod Beeblebrox, a three-armed, two-headed man who was president of the galaxy; Trillian, a human that Arthur had previously met; and Marvin, who is a robot with a severely depressing attitude on life. The adventure starts out with Arthur just trying to survive in his new life, but quickly develops into a quest for a long-lost planet, legends about the origins of the Earth, and even a look at the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Turns out it's forty-two. Apparently, it's the question we should have wondered about. Arthur Dent is shocked to discover, upon finding this lost world, that it builds planets! Furthermore, he discovers that the Earth was in fact an enormous computer developed to find the question to life, the universe, and everything. The book ends with Arthur, Ford, Trillian, and Zaphod all heading off for the 'Restaurant at the End of the Universe'. You can buy this book from Amazon.
