The Great Gatsby
(F Scott Fitzgerald)

Publicidade
The Great Gatsby written by F Scott Fitzgerald is a novel of the jazz age which represents the important human issues of hopes and dreams by using effective sybolism, foreboding and vivid metaphores.
The protagonist Jay Gatsby is transformed from th impoverished James Gatz to the flamboyant and fabulously wealthy Gatsby. When Gatsby earns new money from bootlegging he moves the the West Egg in hope to reminisce his love with childhood sweetheart Daisy Fay Buchanan.
As he knows Daisy's voice is "full of money" he knows that if he earns wealth then he may have a chance to win her over.
Narrator of the novel Nick Carraway lives next door to Gatsbys superb long island home and doesnt quite know what to think of him. He states that " he never liked him from beginning to end" and thought he was vulgar beacuse of the extravagant parties Gatsby held in order to entice Nicks second cousin Daisy. However as the novel progresses Nick begins to admire Gatsbys "extraordinary gift for hope" and "romantic readiness".
One of the main areas of symbolism which works effectively in meaning to this novel is Daisys name. Daisy represents the colour gold and white which are realted with wealth and innocence and we are told Daisy also always wore white and drove a "little white roadster" however we soon learn that her innocent appearance and beauty is a false facade.
When Gatsby asks Nick to invite Daisy over to his place to try and win her bakc Nick tells Gatsby "You cant repeat the past" however Gatsby is determined to prove him wrong.
After seeing Gatsbys wealth Daisy agrees to leave the "bullish" Tom howver after a series of tragic and misfortunate events Gatsbys hope disappears and things dont work out right. We soon know that money without humanity is nothing by the conclusion of the book.
