There is a persistent legend on the birth of Kerala. The Lord Vishnu according to Hindu myth is the supreme among Gods. As per the Hindu mythology Lord Vishnu is said to incarnate in ten forms. Out of ten incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parasuram, is the sixth of the ten forms of the God Vishnu the preserver of the Hindu Trinity, The story of kerala goes like this. The incarnation of God Vishnu, warrior Parasuram was born as the youngest son of a pious hermit Jamadagni who lived in deep forest. One day Jamadagni?s wife Renuka happened to see a young couple frolicking in the pool and was overcome by impure thoughts. Jamadagni through his divine power sensed his wife?s inclination towards the materialist pleasure in her thoughts. The hermit Jamadagni was unable to stand to the sin committed by his wife. Out of sheer disgrace bought by his wife he decided to finish off her. He called his eldest son and explained what had happened and asked him to behead her. Killing one?s own mother was considered as the biggest sin one could commit and he refused. The hermit repeated this demand to other sons who promptly refused. Finally it was the turn of parasuram, who was the youngest of all the children. He most willingly accepted his father?s desire. Parsurama struck off her head with the axe given to him by Lord Shiva. Jamadagni was pleased and promised to grant him a boon. He immediately asked for his mother to be made alive. Thus she was restored to life. At that period of time there lived a wicked Kashtriya King who terrorized the Brahmins. According to the age old division of duties in terms of cast system prevailing, Kashtriya were entitled to rule as king and Brahmins, the learned group of the society were allocated to carry out temple activities. Frustrated and disgusted over the killings of innocent Brahmins, Parasurama was left with no alternate than to kill king Kartavirya. By killing the king Kartavirya he rescued the Brahmins from the harassment. The sons of Kartavirya vouched to take revenge on Parasuram the killer of their father. The vengeful sons killed the hermit Jamadagni, the father of Parasuram, in retaliation. Parasurama?s anger new no bounds and slaughtered all the Kartavirya's sons. Result of a boon, the dead sons of Kartavirya reincarnated twenty-one times, and each time he axed them to death until all were annihilated.. Parasuram had committed grate sins by killing his own mother, the King and sons. According to sage Viswamithra, Parasurma was asked to undergo severe penance for the sins he has committed. Parasuram went on a pilgrimage into the shore of Arabian Sea in south India. on a mountain top he heaved the execution axe into the ocean. The axe fell at Cape Comorian, about 400 miles from where he stood and commanded the sea to retreat. The land between him and where the axe fell rose, known as Kerala.
