Amancio de Vasconcelos, a young Maranhese man came to Rio de Janeiro with the intention of acquiring a degree in medicine. In the beginning he stays with his family friend, Luis Campos, who lived with his wife D.Maria Hortencia and sister in law, Dona Carlotinha. Meanwhile, Amancio with his friend Paiva Rocha starts living a somewhat insane & bohemian lifestyle. The extravagant life of coming home in the early hours of the morning, missing school, getting drunk was not permitted in Campos family house. On the other hand, Hortencia started feeling a certain interest for the young student so he decides to move to Joao Conqueiro's guesthouse, which was introduced to Amancio by Paiva Rocha.He ends up getting evolved with Amelia, sister of Joao Coqueiro. He pretends not to notice their romance and takes advantage by demanding money from the boy (Amancio). Involved in this suffocating and corrupt environment in Joao Coqueiro's and Mme Brizard, his wife's, guesthouse. In the middle of a series of traumas Amancio decides to travel to Sao Luis to see his mother, now a widow. Joao Coqueiro suspects the trip and calls the police to arrest Amancio with the accusation of fraud in which the student is acquitted, in a doubtful trial. Deeply disturbed with the acquittal Joao Coqueiro murders Amancio with a gun shot.
