Stupid White Men
(Michael Moore)

Publicidade
A sarcastic but courageous book about the America of George Bush Junior that intends to reveal the behind-the-scenes activity of the presidential elections of 2000, which consequently confirmed George W. Bush as President of the United States in 2001. The author makes a day by day, hour by hour account of every step of the process that aided the current American President achieve a victory not least contested, among other things, by the democrats, but which for the author of the book is a forced possession of power. The vote recount, the incredible 50/50 split of the Florida electorate, and other paradoxical situations, are described in the book with a dramatic irony. However the book doesn't only talk about the election-swindle, describing one by one the politicians, who now follow the Bush Administration, who have many economical links with the biggest multinational oil companies. The American society that is described is very different from the one that we know, and it gives us an outline that it is very hard to believe; obviously we must consider the cultural, economical and social differences at the heart of the continents of America and Europe. The author examines the death penalty, which still exists today in 19 states, even if two them have established a moratorium, and then examines the judicial system; the healthcare system that neglects the thousands of people in poverty; public education, whose resources are constantly cut in favour of security policies against terrorism, as a result of which it transpires that students are confined to studying texts from the 70s! The racial situation is described as a problem that America has never managed to resolve like that of equality for women. The author spares nothing, attacking the politics of George W.Bush (the text is constantly brought up-to-date) and neithers leave out the things that were and were not done by the democrats in Clinton's time in office. Although the book talks about economical, political and social factors, the author explains it in a clear, simple and ironic way that is in no way tedious despite presenting a great deal of facts and figures supporting his claims. Above all the author, who seems to address the American public first and foremost, helps the reader to follow his conjectures as if he himself were listening to his revelations in that same moment. It leaves the reader with many reflections on the matter and above all the reader unknowingly appreciates the similarities and the differences between their own country and the United States.
