?The Zahir? by Paulo Coelho takes the reader on a voyage of exploration into the mysteries of love. This book is written as if the author himself is the main character, and he narrates the story in the first person, beginning with the shock of discovering his wife has suddenly disappeared without trace.
The search to find out exactly what happened to her becomes an obsession, a ?zahir?, which consumes his every waking hour, but the essence of the story, as the truth begins to unfold, becomes his own personal journey of self-awareness. He believed his marriage was strong and happy, but as he begins to connect with people who were his wife?s comrades prior to her disappearance, and in whom he took little interest, he realises how he has taken too many things for granted, and often listened to her without hearing.
The narrator begins to follow the trail of his wife and learns the importance of living one breath at a time, in the present moment. He comes to the realisation that a ?zahir? is not just an obsession with a person or thing, it is also a fixation upon all the past programming that has become imprinted upon the mind and emotions, resulting in subconscious rules that govern lives. In order to experience love in its purest form this conditioning must be challenged, released and forgotten. Paulo Coelho teaches that spiritual truths can be found through experiencing a new freedom of heart and mind.
It is the author?s intention that there is no single spiritual message contained between the leaves of this book, but rather strands of truth woven together skilfully, to make a rich tapestry of meaningful awareness. Love is the true energy that generates enthusiasm. Love is everywhere, in everyone and everything. Love is real.
