The Woman Warrior
(Maxine Hong Kingston)
In the canon of writing The Woman Warrior probably features in the top runners of books recommended in New Literatures: The writer: Maxine Hong Kingston was born in Stockton, California, USA in 1940 and her book: The Woman Warrior was published in 1976 and won a prize: National Book Critics Circle Award in the USA The dedication is interesting and reads: dedicated to Mother and Father ... In these days, of derivatives, it's a hopeful sign to read ... such pure thoughts produced by such a great writer! The Book was highly recommended to me by a University Colleague over 10 years ago! I probably had expressed the view that I wanted him to recommend some work written by women writers! It is described as .. a delightful book .. which deals with the stangeness of being Chinese and a woman. It is a long hard read though for the student and I would suggest /dipping in/ as I have done and is described as a Memoir in Childhood of a girlhood among ghosts! Often, I suppose, ghosts is a popular them! I was invited sometime ago to write a ghost story in Ireland all to do with the house next door which had been owned by an Asian Doctor who worked at the local Hospital but had either gone home to London or was working in another part of the UK! I dutifully started up my story and it was very well received! In fact, the house next door was full to brimming point with furniture and excellent curtains .. on all the windows .. prominently displayed! One day, I caught sight of a gentleman stepping out of a Red Sportscar and I walked up to him and asked him if he owned this house next door! "No! he replied! "I did own it, a long time ago! That house of course is now no more! Back to Maxine Hong Kingston as her critics evaluate her book as one of the best of that decade presumably the one in which it was published ...1977 ... I was working at that time ... Happy reading ... read on!
