Q.The difference btween two positive integers is 50.The ratio of these integers is 1:3.Find these integers ?

Solution : We are given two relations beteen two integers.Let us denote the smller integer by unknown Y

The statement tells us that the difference is 50 thus two integers are Y and Y+50
Second statement tells us that the ratio is 1:3 thus

1 Y
------ = --------------
3 Y + 50

1 X (Y+ 50) = 3 X Y
Y + 50 = 3Y
50 = 2Y
Y = 25

The two integers were expressed by Y and Y+50 and Y is 25 hence two integers are 25 and 25 + 50 i.e. 25 and 75.

Check the statement : difference is 50 so 75 - 25 = 50
ratio is 1:3 so 25 :75 = 1:3

Hence the solution is correct.
