The Complete Tightwad Gazette
(Amy Dacyczyn)
The Complete Tightwad Gazette is a compendium of tips for frugalites. Compiled from newsletters printed over a period of several years, this book is a combination of articles written by Amy (nicknamed "the frugal zealot") and letters written by her readers over the years. The book opens with a meditation by the author on her reasons for thrift and frugality. She explains that through "tightwadding" she was able to quit her job and stay at home with her children, and at the same time was able to fulfill her dream of owning a New England farm house. She suggests that thrift is a valuable alternative to work for many Americans and that it can help people to achieve their own goals and dreams. The book is a combination of the three books published prior to this and, as such, is divided into three distinct sections. The organization within each section is very loose. Popular tips include an analysis on money saved by hanging clothes to dry, a recipe for homemade pizza, and suggestions on getting fussy kids to try new kinds of food. In addition to the many tips, Amy includes a series of success stories from readers who were able to use frugality to achieve their own individual goals.
