Freedom At Midnight

M.K.Gandhi made a novel experiment of non-violence in his struggle for Indian Independence and won too. However the book titled ?Freedom at Midnight? penned by Lorry Collins and Dominique Lapierre shows us the enormous amount of bloodshed that preceded Indian Independence. And this was due to the communal clashes that erupted between Hindus and Muslims centering round partition.
The violence took place in the united Punjab. While the northern part went to Pakistan the southern part remained with India. Unfortunately Hindus were in northern parts as minorities and Muslims were in the southern part as minorities and they had to leave their homes and lands where their ancestors lived and worked for generations leaving behind everything. It was a great exodus in history. It was a colossal tragedy. Passions of hatred and vengeance ran high the cities of Amritsar and Lahore and the regions in between witnessed mass murders of genocidal proportions and according to the authors two million people lost their lives in the holocaust. We are shocked to learn that a train arrived in a station full of passengers killed on the way and wagons with pools of blood.
The book is a product of a special type of journalistic books which we cannot simply dismiss as sensational writing. Neither can we come to the conclusion that all the details given in the book are exactly correct. The point of view of the writers is the most important thing. How democratic they are? That is the question. With a democratic concept they can make independent studies of events and problems and write which will help resolve many issues causing bloodshed in different parts of the world.
?Freedom at Midnight? also discusses the transfer of power to the Indians. It had vanished from the stands long back but it made a sensation when it appeared. And it recalls to the memory one of the dark chapters in the lives of India and Pakistan and Bangladesh which seceded from Pakistan.
