The Grapes Of Wrath
(John Steinbeck)
One of the greatest books ever!!!! The Grapes of Wrath is based in the era of the American depression. People are driven of their property by the banks that previously helped them to get that land. This is the story of the Joad family, who are run off of their land in Oklahoma because of drought and poverty. The Joads pack up everything and head west. Tom Joad is a young member of the family who is released from prison only to find that his family has been driven from their home and is staying at his uncle's house until they can figure out what to do about their sudden homelessness. It is by pure coincidence that Tom was released early on good behaviour, otherwise he may very well never have seen his family again. He finds them in a state of near desperation, as they begin more and more to realize the predicament that they are in. Their trek across half of the country, on their way to California to assume jobs that they've heard about, California represents the great unknown where the streets are paved with gold and there's work and land for everyone. The family encounters every hardship imaginable on this journey, from family members dying to their struggle to feed themselves to their old truck constantly breaking down. He can't stand any more of the stuff his family must deal with. He is going to become enterprising. Unfortunately, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. It's a group of socialists (some would call them dirty Commies) who come to the rescue with their collectivism setting things right.
