Um Copo De Cólera
(Raduan Nassar)
This is a uncommon book. Has seven chapters, each one with only one period. First and last chapters have the same name - the Arrival - what can take to the conclusion that at the first one is the masculine vision and at the last one the feminine point of view. It was published in 1970, when Brazil was ruled by a military dictatorship. So, the romanticist made a script that has some similarity with Brazilian people life at that time. Symbolically, it seems the man represents the ruler and strong, and the woman the dominated and oppressed people. But attention: this does not mean that the author has had this intention. The man does not have name and its profession is unknown. The woman, also without name, is journalist. The story is about the disagreement between the protagonists. The book starts with a banal fact: the man became angry because ants are destroying shrubs that surround his mansion, and start struggling with the woman. One can say the ants destroy the fence and the life of this man. The couple can represent, also, the crisis between man and woman, the day-by-day small conflicts that made common life insupportable. He does not like to see the woman talking with subordinates. It's like Graciliano Ramos' personage Pablo Onório at Bernardo novel. Both, man and woman, represent papers expected by society: he is the rational, the one that think and has to act in this way; she is fragile. The man sees in the woman the loving figure of a mother, mainly when she washes his hair. For her, he is like a son, specially when is lying in bed, as an embryo. Sexually, she satisfies his desires, being like a Japanese gueixa. But at the field of ideological debate she dominates, for being journalist, speechs better. The fight does not have looser or winner, but at the end he meets himself alone. It is a post-modernist novel which history could happen anytime, anywhere. It has many erudite terms (remembers baroque rhetoric), but the author uses also bad words that give reality to the power and suffering battle of the couple. The reading is surprising for the different style and the interesting portray of the daily life of a couple. It seems that the man and the woman are living creatures, ready to jump from the book?
