Joshua
(The Bible)
THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The book contains 24 chapters, and covers over a period of seven years. Only a few chapters of the book talk about the military campaigns of Joshua. It provides a glimpse of Joshua as an efficient leader. The people under his leadership were not the stubborn and disobedient older generation to which in fact Joshua belongs. These Israelites were of slave mentality. The book shows how God was totally in charge of the situation in their lives. The younger generation is pictured as obedient and respectful. They welcomed Joshua and his leadership. This book delineates two important aspects of Joshua?s life. The first task of Joshua was to lead the Israelites to Canaan. The book talks about how he directs a military campaign to take control of the land, God has promised them. Finally, his task was to allocate different portion of the conquered land. The book shows how he carried these two tasks efficiently. The book describes Joshua as a great commander obedient to God. It also gives a beautiful description of the land of Canaan; it calls the land very poetically ?a land of milk and honey?.
