Portnoy's Complaint
(Philip Roth)

Publicidade
Roth?s classic novel centers on a Jewish man with a difference - he has Portnoy?s Complaint. The opening page of the book sets the tone with a frank revelation of the protagonist?s psychological condition - ?A disorder in which strongly-felt ethical and altruistic impulses are perpetually warring with extreme sexual longings, often of a perverse nature??. This should give anyone about to read the book a fair expectation of what is about to come.
Written as one continuous monologue, the piece is cleverly construed and the raw feeling is well portrayed. Portnoy?s rants build in pace and rhythm as his own experiences and frustrations grow, particularly with his attitude to sex. Due to a strict and sheltered upbringing, at which he talks of at great length, the book weaves through the troubled times of Alexander Portnoy.
This book may make your granny burn down a synagogue, but for those not of faint heart this is a hilarious read. A product of its times in the sixties sexual revolution, this book is a must read.
