Sick Puppy
(Carl Hiaasen)

Publicidade
Sick Puppy is an outrageous satire based on the American insistence on the creation of real estate, even if it means destroying the natural beauty and fragile environment around it. This particular work centers on the development of a Gulf coast ?island?, made in the image of yet another tourist resort. The creator of this artificial paradise is in for a shock - the natural habitat is defended by an eco warrior by the name of Twilly Spree.
The obviously deranged and aptly named Spree undertakes a stalking campaign against the developer, during which he exacts nature?s revenge on him for any infringement, no matter how small. The retaliation taken is quite spectacular and side splitting, even if it is a little eccentric and flamboyant.
The characters in this novel are far from dull and this is what leads to the success of the book. Hiaasen takes a range of bizarre personalities and assembles them with an unnatural ease, despite the unlikely combination. His exploration of these characters and their traits is fascinating - seemingly he manages to convince you of conflicting views that are polar opposites. This insight to the human psyche makes the spiralling procedures more enjoyable and allows you to empathise more with the events that unfold.
If you can deal with the contrived style of humour, this book is an excellent read. The surreal ness of this offering by Hiaasen is also its strength, as this is where he really brings the reader to his way of thinking. This is an interesting piece on the oddities of modern day society - really enjoyable.
