DALIT AGONY AND ISLAM
S G Haque

India a developing nation is facing multiple problems. The people of different religion, caste and community live in India. Over one billion people are part of this wonderful land. In spite of its rich human, cultural and material resources, the once land of golden birds is engulfed in various problems on socio-economic forum. No doubt, the economy of India is on boom, but the country?s rich human resources are often seen up in arms. There is serious division in the society on the basis of caste. Here the people belong to upper caste, popularly known as forward and lower caste i.e. backward. A section of people exist here, which was considered Untouchable and people still called them Dalit i.e. Oppressed. These people were considered the people of lowest social strata and they were subjected to severe physical and mental torture since the year zero. Their unending agony has not stopped yet. Of course, about 125 members of parliament, several ministers, judges, academicians and intellectuals come from this section, but the incident of mass killing and burning the houses of people of this so called lowest strata are also continuing.
The studies on this problem have always revealed that there is a centuries old mindset that forces people to practice discrimination against people of own religion and nation. The government of India has granted them constitutional cover right from day one and seems taking every possible measure to bridge the gap. But, the problems of Dalits are not coming to an end. However, the people of this section are of sizeable number and hold important positions in government in legislature, executive and judiciary.
This caste specific discrimination policy has always been seen as a major human rights violation case and a hindrance in the progress of India. Apart from the Government, the NGOs, media and people engaged in social re engineering are also working to solve this problem. The Radiance views weekly have also studied the problem of the caste-based discrimination and the findings of the study have been presented in the form of a book Dalit Agony and Islam. This is first book of its kind on Dalit problem and the publisher has presented its solution. The book is now on sale and available in English and several Indian languages. The book contains 80 pages. It?s a must read book for the people of intelligentsia class.
