Chatô - The King Of Brazil
(Fernando Morais)

The book is a biography about a famous brazilian journalist who has changed, literally, the history of Brazil. Francisco de Assis Chateaubriand Bandeira de Melo was born in Umbuzeiro, Paraíba in 1892. Beyond "ugly, scrubby and yellow", he was stammerer and has just learned to read when he was nine years old. Even so, he has graduated as Bachelor of Laws and learned French and German. At this time, he got a job in a local journal. But nobody could imagine how long that guy would go. At the end of his life, he had an empire formed by tens of newspapers, magazines, radio and TV agencies, farms and companies. Word was his weapon. By means of his journals he used to attack his enemies and to reverence his friends. And, this way, he got a lot of things. He helped his friend Getúlio Vargas to becomepresident of Brazil after 30's Revolution. He has founded the first Latin American TV Agency (TV Tupi). He has founded MASP (Art Museum of São Paulo) . He has married three times and got three children (Fernando, Gilberto e Teresa). But his weddings failed to hold. Very womanizer, he used to be surrounded by a lot of women. His was friend of important people, like industrials, bankers and influent politicians. Outside Brazil, he was known as the brazilian "Citizen Kane", allusion to the famous movie with the same name by Orson Welles. In politics, Chateaubriand came to be senator and, after, ambassador of Brazil in England, where he has given a beautiful necklace of diamonds to the Queen Elizabeth and has consecrated William Churchil as Sir of the Jagunço's Order, a ficticious title that he used to honor his friends. Francisco de Assis Chateaubriand Bandeira de Melo, the Chatô, was not born rich neither noble, but during his life he became a king in Brazil.
