Searching for Inspiration

Marianne Szeto

We all need some inspiration every once in a while. Some people need inspiration to do great work like a painter who is inspired by a beautiful sunset. Others need to be inspired to spark innovation and creativity. Today, I need to be inspired to manage my diabetes. It is so easy to take things for granted like our health. I have written about them in the past, but two of my uncles are having a really hard time with their diabetes. They are both undergoing dialysis and are in a great deal of pain. Our entire family suffers with them. One of my uncles has a young family, and the other is dealing with this all on his own - thousands of miles away from the rest of the family. It breaks my heart.
So today, I need some inspiration. I did a search for famous diabetics on Yahoo! and came up with a number of big names: Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor, Miles Davis, Neil Young... the list goes on. One name, in particular, grabbed my attention: Ella Fitzgerald. She is considered by some to be one of the most influential jazz vocalists ever. Known as the "First Lady of Song," Ella's musical career was a great success. Her personal health, however, was a different story. She became blind due to complications of her diabetes and eventually had both her legs amputated. Ella died in 1996 at the age of 79. Although she suffered from severe complications of diabetes, I am inspired by the life that this courageous woman led. She had a very difficult childhood, suffering personal tragedies such as the death of her mother at a young age, trouble with the law, and a brief period of homelessness. In spite of all these obstacles, Ella was destined for greatness. Her accomplishments in life are truly inspiring to me. She collaborated with jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Joe Pass, and Duke Ellington. She made film and television appearances, won thirteen Grammy Awards, and is remembered today for her amazing voice and improvisational skills.
While Ella may have suffered from diabetic complications, it is important to realize that many of the things we take for granted today in terms of diabetes self-management were not available to her. In spite of this fact, she lived a long and fulfilling life. Who inspires you?
