Oliver Twist
(CHARLES DICKENS)
Oliver Twist has spent nearly all of his childhood in an orphanage, being beaten, used and humiliated. He thought that nothing good will ever happen to him, that it will always be as it was. But the fate has called for him. In a series of extraordinary coincidences, merciful fate and perhaps God's own mercy, he finds his happiness and family - he gets to know about the story of his past, and miraculously meets his sister, of whom he had not even known that exists. Before this happens however, the boy must take on many trials, having to work as a slave, being trained as a thief by a band of scoundrels, yet emerging victorious from all these trials. Many times will he look death in the eyes, but with his friends' help, he will prevail. The story is written in an excellent way, being easy to read and fascinating, it presents all social classes of the times' London and England. We meet beggards who have to steal to survive, and people who can afford any luxury. The most important problem shown in Oliver is using children for hard work. Fortunately, this problem no longer exists, at least in England. Currently, a movie of Oliver Twist is also available, but it's nothing compared to the book.
