? The Quest For Personal Power? ? A book of life

Dr Phil Nuremberger was perhaps wrong by naming his book as ? The Quest For Personal Power?. The title of the book should rather be ?The Book Of Life?. Here he writes on the teachings, and practical applications of the thousand years old science of physical, mental and spiritual self-mastery. In its long introduction, the major part occupies the description of his self-transformation. Even being educated in Psychology, the author searches for a meaningful life in physical, mental and in spiritual dimensions through traditional yogic means.
The book is divided in two parts ?The knowledge of Self Mastery? and ?The Skills of Self Mastery?. In the first part he discusses the recognition of inner resources of human beings. What ails human beings? Why human beings suffer, physically and mentally?
The book is a reflection of his personal feelings and experiences, yet his views shared by many. When the author dealt with the patients for clinical symptoms like headache, high blood pressure, chronic pain, ulcers etc, soon he realized that these factors are external manifestations of certain inner ailments. Only symptomatic treatments of these causes temporarily heal the ailments, but it could not root out the inner causes for which the external symptoms are manifested.
He argues that, we have sufficient power within us to root out such evils and take control over our selves. Most of our diseases originate in our minds. These diseases are developed, as the stress levels within us, are imbalanced. But we are capable enough to control these stresses and lead a meaningful life, both physically and mentally.
In the second part, he illustrates various means to deal with the stress and develop a healthy body and a healthy mind. The author tries to unify the body and mind, which is complementary to each other. He finds out various means of Asanas (Physical postures) and Pranayamas (Breath control) from the treasures of thousand years old Indian tradition, developed by the yogis of that period.
Due to our erratic life style, our body and mind do not work in tandem. One of the major causes of our ailments is inhalation of insufficient oxygen during breathing. The chapter ? The Breath Of Life? starts with a quotation of a renowned yogi Swami Rama ? If you know the breath, you will know everything?. The author describes the methods of many Pranayamas here, which can cause miraculous healing effect on human body. In the other chapters he describes different Asanas, Relaxation techniques and meditations that can work wonder for anybody.
The 375 pages book is an integrated approach to view body and mind in one perspective. Readers can find out the relevant exercises or pranayamas easily, according to his need. Beautiful sketches of different postures along with the addendum and annexure are added attraction of the book.
