Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons
(Lorna Landvik)
Lorna Landvik authored a touching story about five women who bonded and supported each other through four decades of book club meetings. Set in a small town in 1960?s Minnesota, these women meet as mothers who stayed at home with their children and together faced the trials of history ? divorce and new careers, Vietnam and the sexual revolution, growth of their families and the strengthening of friendships. Faith faces the world as a mother of twins and the perfect pilot?s wife. She is the shoulder that everyone cries on (though she would never shed a tear in public). Her beautiful demeanor is made possible by the stunning façade she has created to hide from everyone her harrowing past and the secret that haunts her life. Audrey is the overly sexy, confident, and outspoken member of the group. She is utterly comfortable (and knowledgeable) in her sexuality though unconventional sexuality leads her life in a most surprising direction. Merit is stunningly beautiful but lacks confidence in her intelligence and individuality. She is steered by her overbearing and abusive husband to silent rebellion. With the help and protection of her friends, she is able to leave behind her abusive past and redefine love. Skip is a tiny, spit-fire of an activist who blazes a trail into the seventies and the feminist revolution. No cause is too distant to spur Skip?s loyalty. Kari is the oldest member in the group and the last to find her place as a mother. Her skilled craftsmanship and unique insights guide her family and the club. The women met at each others? houses while their children played in the basement despite the argument of men who thought women were incapable of discussing literature. It was Merit?s husband Eric who thusly named the club Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons insisting they only wasted this time complaining about their domestic lives and getting fatter on candy. Together, the women grew out of an era that gave them no credit and inspired the next generation to forge strong friendships and share a good book once in a while.
