Ulisse
(James Joyce)
Ulysses by Joyce is a huge and complex novel, which narrates a single day (the 16th of June 1904) in the life of three Dubliners. The main character of the first part is Stephen Dedalus, the alter ego of James Joyce, a young man with intellectual ambitions. He is an arrugant young man, whose name recalls the famous greek myth and, in fact, Stephen would like to convert Irish people to the cult of beauty, inherited by greek culture. The second part of the novel is dominated by the figure of Leopold Bloom, the Ulysses of the title: he is a middle age man, married, who wanders around Dublin like Ulysses was doing around the Mediterranean sea, meeting and facing different adventures. The third part id sominated by his wife, Molly Bloom, who corresponds to Penelope, in the same way Stephen Dedalus acts as Ulysses' son, Thelemacus. The novel starts with Stephen being moved out from his house and forced to wander around the streets, looking for a father and an accomodation; in his wandering, he meets Bloom, who adopts him and brings him to his house, where there is Molly Bloom waiting for them, exactly like Penelope with Ulysses. The novel ends with Molly's elucubrations while she is lying on the bed.
