The 120 Days Of Sodom
(Marquis de Sade)

Publicidade
You could say it is a valiant book. Not everyone has the guts to descend to the dirtiest and deepest levels of human selfishness, where nothing is sacred: laws, nation, lives, sex, men and women all exist for the sole and exclusive pleasure of those holding the power. Each one of the characters had a history of research; how is intercourse when the woman suddenly sees her husband being hung? What kind of erotic and gastronomic games can you create when a woman is fed just with milk for several days? Do physical threats can transform a virgin?s aversion into enjoyment? De Sade?s attempts to answer these and several other questions require a group of powerful men who enclose themselves in a castle for several months just to enjoy, far from laws and moral, the pleasures provided by their accompanying troupe. Old whores to tell stories; young boys and girls to deprave, punish and transform; grown men to be active and passive actors ready to answer to every wish and every whisper from their masters. De Sade begins the book as a diary, detailing every action and every fulfilled desire, but it seems that even him cannot find all that variety in filth, for after several weeks the events become somewhat predictable, the reader knows what type of depravation will follow the story of the day and who will carry it. It seems that the author can no longer sustain the creative deeds of his characters, so the events and interactions of last weeks are just outlined, as the draft of a vague script. At this point the reader has only two options: either to believe that human depravation has a bottom, represented by De Sade?s book, or to accept that the author himself did not see it all, did not reach the deepest and dirtiest levels of human selfishness.
